Artistic Focus – Mildred Geisendorfer’s works are quite rare, and little is known about her career as an artist, although her ceramic figures reveal her as an accomplished Modernist sculptor.
Career Highlights –
- Mildred Geisendorfer was born in Los Angeles, California in 1913.
- She spent her childhood in Oakland and in nearby Berkeley, where she attended Berkeley High School.
- Geisendorfer received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from the University of California in 1936, where she was a member of the Delta Epsilon Art Honor Society with Rexford Brandt and Mine Okubo, who went on to have their own illustrious careers as artists.
- Geisendorfer also studied at Oakland’s California College of Arts and Crafts under Hamilton Wolf.
- During the mid-1930s Geisendorfer worked for California Faience, a pottery studio based in Berkeley, California in existence from 1915 to 1959.
- In 1938 she married Julius Schroeder, a physical education instructor and coach at the University of California, and the couple made their home in Berkeley. Mildred would subsequently also be known as Mildred G. Schroeder.
- By 1940 Geisendorfer had exhibited her sculpture at the Oakland Art Gallery at Oakland’s Municipal Auditorium, and she began painting and jewelry-making in the 1950s.
- By 1955 Geisendorfer and her husband had relocated to San Joaquin County, California, where Julius Schroeder operated ice skating rinks. The couple first lived in Lodi, and by 1964 had relocated to Stockton, California.
- After her husband’s death in 1978, Mildred Geisendorfer Schroeder continued to live in Stockton until her passing there in 1993.
