Artistic Focus – Jean de Roncourt was a French master sculptor of masculine, athletic figures, who was active in the 1920s and 1930s. It was quite typical for sculptors to use pseudonyms in the Art Deco period, and to produce work using two or three different names; and since virtually no information is available regarding de Roncourt’s life and career, some researchers believe that the name could be a pseudonym used by either of the Art Deco sculptors Demétre Chiparus (1886-1947) or Ugo Cipriani (1887-1960). It is also believed that sculptures by de Roncourt were produced under the pseudonyms “G. Hervor” and “J. Rudens.”
