We are very pleased to present our first exhibition of sculptures by California artists. Sculptures in bronze, ceramic, clay, marble, wood and other media are included in this exhibition. This is a comprehensive survey of sculpture created by California artists between 1905 and 1950.
Artists featured in this exhibition include Robert Ingersoll Aitken, Chester Beach, Alexander Stirling Calder, Ruth Cravath, Karoly Fulop, Merrell Gage, Mildred Geisendorfer, Donal Hord, Peterpaul Ott, Philip Paval, Nina Saemundsson, Jacques Schnier, Albert Stewart and Julia Bracken Wendt.
In the Roman religion, Mercury is the god of shopkeepers and merchants, travelers and transporters of goods. Robert Ingersoll Aitken’s bronze Mercury is a study in the human form, fatigued yet strong, bold yet languid. A masterwork by this important American sculptor. Aitken is known for his public sculptures. His Victory monument, a tribute to Admiral Dewey’s victory at Manila Bay, stands in San Francisco’s Union Square.
